Maxwell Armfield (1881-1972) studied at Birmingham and in Paris. With Gaskin at Birmingham he inhaled the true spirit of the Arts and Crafts Movement, and settled ultimately in the Cotswolds. He was otherwise , he claimed, largely self taught. His uncomfortable experiences with Life Drawing often tended to make him rely on well honed graphic formulae. His Tempera Painting Today (1946) showed him to be a natural communicator on the subject of his favourite medium. |
