Gustave Baumann was born in Germany in 1881 and came to America as a young boy and supported his family as a commercial artist. Having established his own studio he took a sabbatical year in Germany at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Munich which inspired him to concentrate on colour woodcuts. Returning to Chicago where he studied at the Art Institiute, and settled in Santa Fe in 1918, forever associated with the encouragement and development of the visual arts there before his death there in 1971. He made a particular study of Native American art and culture, making detailed marionettes for a puppet show he toured with his wife. The example of his work shown here is kindly made available by Michael T.Ricker.
