Alfred Crowquill was a joint production of the Forestier Brothers, Alfred (pictured above 1804 -1872) and Charles. The former was prolific as a caricaturist and book illustrator and did much illustration for his brother who also wielded a sharp pen. Although the Crowquill signature lasted well into the 1860's, the style was clearly that of a previous age, of grotesque humour and generalised graphic content set in a vignetted form. The occasional coloured print of compositional complexity hints at the vigour and invention that the artist was capable of. |
