This is only one of many imagined and real examples of a musical instrument designed to play colour either in juxtaposition with music, or to provide the joint experience. The Russian composer Scriabin constructed a similar instrument as did Percy Grainger and the animator Len Lye.

In Huysman's A Rebours (Against the Grain) the aesthetic hero made a keyboard that released different amounts and kinds of spirit into a glass, as an approximation of a piece of Mozart.
