John O'Hara Cosgrave II (1908-1968) is particularly known as a devotee of sailing, and active as a marine painter (he illustrated Saint-Exupery Wind Sand and Stars in 1939). He was educated at the University of California and then enjoyed two years of study in Paris. He produced commissioned work for FORTUNE, LIFE and YACHTING. His FORTUNE cover of April 1935 shows him at his decorative, compositional best (see Chronology of Covers). He was a graphic designer with the newly founded United Nations after 1945.
