MINNESOTA TACONITE
HUDSON'S BAY: RETURN TO GREATNESS

JOHN GROTH (1908-1988).

The Minnesota Taconite feature is not only one of the most ambitious and expansive reportage commission ever published by FORTUNE, but also represents the best of Groth's prolific and uneven output. He is particularly associated with reportage coverage of war and destruction which focussed his art on human suffering and the abuses of power.

He was a warmly regarded teacher (Robert Smithson) and journalist. He was ESQUIRE's first Art Director. His drawings of the Trial of Jack Ruby are held in the Dallas Public Libraries. His location drawings of scenes in the Korean War are in the collection of the US Army Medical Department. He was a consistent and fierce contributor of scathing and satirical images to the magazines of the American Left such as the New Masses.
