SMALL OUTBURSTS
This
site records a range of material dedicated to the study of the Visual
Narrative. The original site, intended by me for part-time students and
other interested parties was closed down by the University of Brighton
in 2004. I was subsequently denied access to the original
images most of which, however, were in my own collection. I have developed the site on a daily basis thereafter. It remains exclusively educational and is in constant
use. Many thanks to those in
the UK and beyond who shared my irritation at events. Contact
me on

Wherever possible I have tried to get copyright permissions. The site is purely educational and dedicated to the understanding of the Visual Narrative. Please tell me if I need to contact you. Most of the illustrators represented retain their own copyrights. I will unhesitatingly remove any image of which you own the rights. Many of the images are scanned from scrapbooks assembled by commercial artists for their own reference, so I may not have the date or the source. Chris Mullen
JULY 2012 The site is not supported by an outside institution nor by advertising. For twelve years it has been assembled entirely at my own cost, and is hosted on my own server. Many of the images have been acquired solely to make them available to those people like me who are obsessed with art and artists. JANUARY 2015 "The British Library would like to archive your website in the UK Web Archive. The UK Web Archive was established in 2004 to capture and archive websites from the UK domain, responding to the challenge of a 'digital black hole' in the nation's memory. It contains specially selected websites that represent different aspects of online life in the UK. We work closely with leading UK institutions to collect and permanently preserve the UK web, and our archive can be seen at http://www.webarchive.org.uk/." OCTOBER 2017 The prevailing aesthetic still holds (see Design Notes). The deployment of image and text seeks 1. to convey stained glass rather than any printed page of whatever age; 2. to locate in the seventeenth century rather than the century of Microsoft and Twitter; 3, the mnemonic processes of the memory theatre rather than the dumb machinations of the algorithm; 5. the cut of European cloth and less of the Yankee waistcoat; 6. the anti-Gravity preponderance of the inverted pyramid, a formal leitmotif that extnds to most of the walls of the house here in Brighton.
OCTOBER 2017 DEVELOPMENTAL NOTE icons and image size are being upgraded for the touch screen but still rely on the whopping great screen/s in your study. If I find you've been consulting the VTS on your smart phone or wrist watch, you're in Big Trouble. I want details of the miscreants who consult me as they hang on a strap in the carriage. They will be admonished. see POLICY document, "Naming and Shaming"
