There is a type of book illustration, of poetic interpretation that seems to avoid the characteristic excesses of sentim,ment of much of the trade after 1850. There are two books that contain much excellent work, in the interpretation of narratives in the landscape and in the technical means for designing for engraving on wood Jean Ingelow, Poems, Longman's London 1867, and to a lesser extent ,Robert Buchanan, North Coast and Other poems, Routledge, London 1868.
