Wilkinson (1891-1965) started his career under Arthur Moreland at the Morning Post in London. He started with The Passing Show doing colour covers from 1921 until the magazine merged with Illustrated (see British Cartoon Archive, University of Kent). He was still working for the Daily Herald and SUN in the last years of his life. The examples of work shown above demonstrate his sure touch with humour and composition. I want to alert you to his capacity to include vast amounts of unnecessary detail that swell the importance and delight of the drawing - the energy of the pursuit in aerial detritus and an infinity of scree. The Kent entry adds,"Wilkinson worked mostly in line and wash using a Mitchell 0299 pen and Winsor & Newton No. 2 ink on paper - he disliked Bristol Board." |
