PAINTING ONE,At the above auction a total of three paintings, including the current painting, were acquired. All relate to the promotion of Amberlite (an ion exchange resin) for Rohm and Haas. The auction house provides a title of "Method for Obtaining Healthy Yields,” presumably the title to an accompanying advertisement, but I am unable to verify. In the mean time I provide a given descriptive title of “Suspended cylindrical devices.” This painting is the only one dated but it appears clear that all are from approximately the same time period, so the other two are provided with estimated dates of 1955-1957. Signed on the inside of the watch cover. On the verso of the overmat, concealed under the support panels, is graphite text from the framer, as per the following image. The writing suggests that the work is being framed for Rohm and Hass (7953) and to be completed “ASAP.” These notations, and the similarities in framed presentation suggests strongly that all three works were framed for Rohm and Haas and were destined for their collection/corporate offices. All three works are framed with nicely worked mats with rounded corners which accomodate the rounded corners on the painted works. |
PAINTING TWO , The current painting is the only one dated but it appears clear that all are from approximately the same time period, so the other two are provided with estimated dates of 1955-1957. Initialled and dated on the horizontally-oriented device at upper right. Countersigned on the verso of the board in graphite with “Neeley Assoc.” also in graphite. There is a small area of indecipherible writing, also in graphite at LLV of the board. Regarding framing notations on the mat for the work with my given title of “Pipettes and flasks,” these notations, and the similarities in framed presentation suggests strongly that all three works were framed for Rohm and Haas and were destined for their collection/corporate offices.
