Thomas Nast (1840-1902) had a terrific pictorial heritage, consolidating for the viewer the characterisation of Uncle Sam, Santa Claus, the Republican Elephant and the Democratic Donkey, and, above all, the ludicrous figure of Boss Tweed, the inheritor of Daulmier's Le Poire, a mighty totem of Pork Barrel politics. Nast had a particularly effective compoany of skeletons at his disposal. |
