FLAMEN Emblems of Albert Flamen from Devises et emblesmes d'amour moralisez , Remy, Paris, 1648 and a sardonic sexist reflection on the permanence of girl's whisperings. This is a later impression from which some of the crispness has been lost.
GALLIFFET Joseph de Galliffet De Cultu Sacrosancti Cordis Dei ac Domini Nostri Jesu Christi An interesting extension of the heart motif in the emblem books and here in a directly religious context - here a dull text from the point of view of the Jesuits. Each page measures 9 x 16cms.
MONTENEY Georgette de Montenay ; Emblematum, 1584 a handcoloured version of the engraving by Pierre Woeiriot in the first directly religious (sectarian - Protestant) of the emblem books, prepared by the author, a poet in the circle of the Queen of Navarre.
HORUS APOLLO Horus Apollo ; Emblems, 1543 The woodcuts (page size 10 x 16cms)in this little book have long been regarded as a crowning achievement of sixteenth century French Renaissance illustration. The book was printed in Paris by Jacques Kerver in 1543. The title reveals the influence much felt through Europe at the time of arcane thought and imagery from the Classical Egyptian period , even if from our vantage point the initial texts and images have turned out to be of a much later date. "De la signification des notes Hieroglyphiques des Aegyptiens... " The high quality of the woodcuts suggests an artist/s of distinction, and the names of Jean Goujon and Jean Cousin are mentioned today as possible illustrators. see also
