3M's plant is located four miles out of the city of St.Paul, Minnesota. This is a fine example of FORTUNE's haunting the seedier side of town - a row of varied housing and a peppering of sick looking trees. Gallagher's other imagery for the magazine, particularly of naval might, is more predictable and less revealing.
