Although edited by the capable journalist Macdonald Hastings, Country Fair is an assertive contender for the title, Most Boring Magazine of all Time. The articles are uniformly dull and narrow in pespective, predicated upon a blind and sentimental belief in the English Countryside. The photographic supplements cannot be failed in their pursuit of the visual cliche, the Milk Maid, the Pond, and the Tit on the Pint Bottle. The covers by Hanna are at least inventive with a strong whiff of the anthropomorphic. The acid green and Teen Pink are characteristic colours of the age. Lord help us. |
