THE 34 GALLERY AT THE PALLANT |
This section celebrates the formal and narrative possibilities of a world rendered in miniature. My enthusuasm is tempered by my inability as a child to complete Airfix model planes. My protestations that such an activity was tantamount to condoning the Militaristic, were confounded by the uncontrolled flow of glue and the regular loss of vital components. It was no use turning the Lancaster Bomber into a melting Juke Box. My incompetenece was quietly registered by all who observed. Much more influential was the viewing box offering a glimpse of a miniature domestic interior or tiny tableau. I recommend Gainsborough Viewing Box in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, where the artist produced characteristic Gainsborough landscapes, cunningly back lit, with parsley and clay lump attachments. |
