Known as 'Ding', Darling worked as cartoonist for the Des Moines Register and Tribune and the New York Tribune . A friend of Theodore Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover, and active conservationist and wildlife protector.

His original artwork was extremely large, using broad brushstrokes which once reduced look like stiff pen lines.
