This is an unusual copy of the 1930's part publication. It is bound with the highly colourful covers at the back. The owner dated it as 1938, and that seems right. The editorial matter is sensible and well written and the explantory illustrations highly professional. I show a visualisation of the Mersey Tunnel, and a flying boat as being typical.

The covers which are reproduced here in their totality are heroic statements of the mechanical sublime - all realised with a high sheen air brush patina. The cheerful lettering in black outlined red adds considerably to the panache. When the illustrations are repeated in the body of the text, they do not have the brashness and optimism you see above. I have seen sets of this publication bound without the covers - a huge disappointment.
