At the University of East Anglia Peter Lasko invited a range of speakers to the students in the new School of Fine Arts and Music. Anthony Blunt fell off the podium and tore his trousers. Kenneth Clark exhaled a worldy ennui in foulmouthing abstract painting. The pure delight was Ernst Gombrich who made a bee line for the students, passing the massed ranks of Norwich Society.

John Gage had a huge respect for him. In years after I regularly cheered myself up and sharpened my critical and historical skills by returning to my Gombrich books. How often I have sought in vain for the exact article. or the exact volume in recommending his work.
